Dragon's Lair for Blu-ray

At least ONE good reason to buy a PlayStation 3. The Register reports: Dragon’s Lair, the now 24-year-old animated video game developed by one-time Disney animator Don Bluth for laserdisc players, is back, remastered for the HD era and now available to buy on Bluth-ray Disc - sorry, Blu-ray Disc.

Why is Enterprise Web 2.0 like Teenage Sex?

Why is Enterprise Web 2.0 like Teenage Sex?

  • It is on everybody’s mind all the time.
  • Everyone is talking about it all the time.
  • Everyone thinks everyone else is doing it.
  • Almost no one is really doing it.
  • The few who are doing it are
    • doing it poorly
    • sure it will be better next time
    • not practicing it safely.

Stupid ad company

Michael Arrington reports at TechCrunch on AdBrite’s newest offering called „BritePic”. Instead of using the old, boring img tag, they use JavaScript to embedd pictures in webpages. This would look something like this:

<script>
  britepic_src="http://www.yoursite.com/yourpic.jpg";
  britepic_id="your_unique_britepic_id";
</script>
<script src='http://www.britepic.com/britepic.js'>
</script>

OK. Now think of „i2010 – A European Information Society for growth and employment” initiative. Part of i2010 is e-Accessibility:
All citizens have the right to benefit from new opportunities that the Information Society offers. People with disabilities and older persons sometimes experience difficulties in accessing these new technologies and services, as some barriers can be inadvertently created by the Information Society itself. Accessibility problems can also be created by specific environment or social conditions.
And take a look at the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0:
Ensure that pages are usable when scripts, applets, or other programmatic objects are turned off or not supported.

Now, of course you could add a „noscript” section with a normal img tag to this abnormality of JavaScript to fullfill the WAI requirements. But why bloat your pages with JavaScript, if a simple, standartized img tag would be enough?

Microsoft Business Practices

Here is a quote from an interview with Alex St John, a former Microsoft employee who helped transform Windows’ printing architecture and fathered the DirectX system:

Alex St John: A month or so in, I still didn’t know exactly what my job was until one of the guys who hired me said, „Write a strategy for how you would persuade the publishing industry to move to Windows.” I spent a lot of time writing documents saying here’s what our strategy should be, here’s how we could convince companies to sign on, all that. I came in to do my presentation, and I got about three slides into it before I was interrupted by one of the executives saying, „This is all great stuff, you have a perfect plan. Developers who are reasonable should all support it, but what do you do if none of this works.” „What do you mean?” „What if in spite of your best efforts, your best arguments, you best relationships, you can’t get them to support them. How do you force the industry to support Microsoft anyway?” „Force them? Well, I don’t know.” „Come back when you have a plan that answers that question.”

That perplexed me for a long time. I’m thinking, „What the hell does he mean, force them? I can’t hold a gun to their head, so how do I put all these companies in a position where, regardless of what they see is in their best interest, they have to adopt your technology?” That experience had a major impact on my thinking. I realized that a major part of my job was to figure out how to use technology control to create economic force, or leverage, such that money and business flowed in Microsoft’s direction, and people had to go [to them]. That, ultimately, is when I became a „Microsoft guy,” when I got that concept.

Shack: Did your fellow evangelists adopt that strategy as well?

Alex St John: Yeah.

The earth is flat, and Microsoft only acts in the best interest of its customers.

New Google Service TiSP Using Austrian Technology?

Google launched a new service today(!):

Google TiSP (BETA) is a fully functional, end-to-end system that provides in-home wireless access by connecting your commode-based TiSP wireless router to one of thousands of TiSP Access Nodes via fiber-optic cable strung through your local municipal sewage lines.

tisp

IMHO, TiSP is the logical extension of Cable Runner, a technology developed in Vienna, Austria to lay cables inside sewers. You use GFlush to connect your home to a TiSP Access Node and use Cable Runner to connect the thousands of TiSP Access Nodes to each other. Pure Genius!

ÖBB bietet Audio-Downloads an

Was daran so besch… ist?

lame --resample 44.1 altesfile.mp3 neuesfile.mp3

Fertig.
